New Metal: In A Time Where Things Feel Unsteady, These Medals Remind Us Who We Are.

After a 13-year hiatus from the top step, we might as well declare it mango season again. Sweet, juicy, and something we’ve been waiting in major anticipation for. Trinidadians everywhere have ceased holding their breath and raised their red, white and black in unison as Keshorn Walcott stormed the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo and finally snatched that elusive gold. This isn’t just a win on the field, it’s a balm for frayed nerves. With the political noise and the simmering tensions with our neighbor Venezuela dominating headlines, this is the kind of moment we needed.

Whenever the Trini flag makes it onto a global podium, the bickering dies down, the same vibes from the likes of carnival return, and for a moment we all reminisce about unity instead of division.

Walcott’s throw of 88.16 metres gave us our gold, his first ever, at a World Championships, coming 13 years after his Olympic triumph. The relief was so palpable you could almost taste it. On the same night, Jereem Richards sprinted to silver in the 400m, blazing a national record of 43.72 seconds.

At home, the medal haul cut through the incessant coverage of interactions between the local government and Venezuela along with the United States and India. The daily headlines of international threats being thrown around like a crumpled piece of paper in a form one classroom were halted by the bell for recess as the headlines highlighted glory instead of grief and fear. And as much as Trinis love a quarrel, nothing unites us faster than seeing the red, white, and black raised high on the world stage.

A gold for Walcott complimented by a silver for Richards and suddenly it feels like the world’s been kind again to Trinidad and Tobago. These men remind us that despite the chaos, we still produce champions. We still demand respect and still deserve to be on the grandest stages.
